Now onto our Week 1 Super Contest Selections using the current posted Westgate SuperContest spread:

Pittsburgh -8.5 over Cleveland: The Cleveland Browns and their rookie QB Deshone Kizer have quite the task of taking on a loaded Pittsburgh Steelers team. Offensively the Steelers roll out Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown, who are arguably the best running back and wide receiver tandem in the in NFL. If those two were not enough, the Steelers also get back field stretcher Martavis Bryant from suspension. Defensively the ageless James Harrison leads an aggressive Steelers unit with young fast playmakers in Ryan Shazier & TJ Watt (JJ’s Watts brother). The Steelers just added Joe Haden from free agency as he was cut from these same Cleveland Browns; expect Haden to be fired up for this one. The Browns are well coached and are headed in the right direction, but this is going to be a long day in Cleveland.

New York Giants +4 over Dallas: The Cowboys vs. the NY Giants matchup is always a battle, so it is no wonder this is the first Sunday night matchup of the season. The Giants beat the Cowboys straight up in both matchups last year, and in 2017 the Cowboys have lost their entire secondary while the Giants added veteran wide receiver Brandon Marshall to pair up with match up nightmare Odell Beckham Jr. Odell is not practicing, but I believe the Giants are just being safe. The Cowboys may be missing all-pro running back Ezekiel Elliot due to suspension, but even if Elliot plays the Cowboys offensive unit will take on a formidable New York Giants defense. I am calling for a straight up New York Giants road win.

Atlanta -6.5 over Chicago: The Bears are a limited team on offense with the often-injured Kevin White and castoff chain mover Kendall Wright playing wide receiver. Jordan Howard is a nice rumbling tumbling running back, but placeholder quarterback Mike Glennon at quarterback is not scaring any defense. Chicago does have a nice front seven on defense, and John Fox is tough to out scheme, but that is not going to get it done against the defending NFC Champion Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta has a young, fast defense to stop the limited Chicago offensive attack and has the fresh early season legs of Devonta Freeman to keep the Bears defense honest against the run opening the passing attack of Matt Ryan to Julio Jones. Atlanta cruises to a line-covering win.

LA Rams -4 over Indianapolis: The Rams have a new Head Coach, Sean McVay, and underrated defensive coordinator Wade Phillips leading the charge. The Rams defensive was solid last year and will get after the QB under Wade Phillips schemes. This is not good news for the Colts, who have a poor offensive line and backup QB Scott Tolzien at the helm. Little worried about second-year Rams QB Jared Goff. However, the Colts defense is not strong, and expect McVay to make things easy for him with short dump offs to RB Todd Gurley and WR Sammy Watkins.

San Francisco +5.5 over Carolina: Carolina QB Cam Newton has barley played this season coming off of offseason shoulder surgery. Cam was not very accurate before the surgery, and now the Panthers are asking him to adjust his play and dump off to rookie Christian McCaffery. Meanwhile, the 49ers have veteran QB Brian Hoyer, who recently led the Houston Texans to their last playoff appearance playing in a QB-friendly Kyle Shannahan offense. Carlos Hyde could be known as one of the best RBs in the NFL if he was not stuck in San Francisco. Shannahan is familiar with Carolina from his time in Atlanta. Plus, Carolina is traveling across country. Give me the points.

Bonus Picks

Arizona -2 over Detroit: The Arizona Cardinals had a disappointing 2016 season that was derailed mostly due to injuries to key players. Still, the Cardinals managed to score the sixth-most points in the NFL last season and were seventh overall in point differential. Meanwhile, the Lions somehow made the playoffs at 9-7 with a -12 point differential. Detroit did not do much to improve this offseason, and it will show against a top-tier NFC opponent.

New England –9 over Kansas City (Thursday): Kansas City is just too conservative to threaten the Patriots, who should put up points against a good defense who will be missing all pro pass rusher Tamba Hali. Giving Brady time to find his targets is a not a good idea. Patriots start their path to 16-0.

New Orleans +3 over Minnesota: The Minnesota defense remains strong but they will take on former future hall of famer Adrian Pederson. The Vikings offensive line is still a major question mark. In a “win one for Adrian” the Saints cover vs the Vikings.

San Diego +3 over Denver: Highly-competitive AFC West divisional game to start the season. Broncos have a revamped offensive line that hopes to fix the running game and give second-choice starter Trevor Simien time to throw vs. Joey Bosa and the Chargers D. Give me the better QB in Phillip Rivers and RB Melvin Gordon in this one.
